Pre-Owned Cars: A Purchasing Guide

Our buying guide for pre-owned cars

If you are thinking of purchasing a pre-owned car, it's important that you don’t jump straight into the first affordable model that comes your way! That’s because, even if it is a used car, it is still an important investment that you should be careful with.

That’s why we are sharing with you some tips to help you find the best value for your money and the right vehicle for your needs!

1. Start by setting your budget

This seems like an obvious first step, but many buyers will be tempted by a vehicle that exceeds their budget! Because it isn’t just the purchasing price that you need to consider, but also how much you will be spending on insurance or on gas.

So be sure that you are taking into consideration more than just the starting price, but also all of the monthly expenses. That’s the best way of staying within your budget!

2. Which vehicle meets my needs?

If you are looking for a family car, you better forget about that two-seater sports car! And if you need for a vehicle to tow your fifth wheel, you should forget about a compact SUV! It is a simple as that.

3. Take it for a test drive!

Whether you are purchasing from a private individual or a dealer, be sure to ask for a test drive of the vehicle. Don't just take their word when they tell you that the car is in perfect condition!

This test drive will also let you know if you are comfortable driving the vehicle. If the salesperson refuses to let you test drive the vehicle, you better stay far from it.

4. Have it inspected

You can inspect the vehicle yourself or hire a mechanic you trust. That will give you a clear picture of the condition of the vehicle and reveal any faulty parts that are in need of repairs. It is one thing to have to change a light bulb, a windshield wiper or the tires, but you don’t want to be stuck with a faulty transmission!

Only you can decide how much you are willing to invest in your new car!

5. Is the vehicle debt free?

To find out, all you need to do is consult the RDPRM (Register of Personal and Movable Real Rights), which will tell you if there are any debts on the vehicle or if it has been given as a collateral.

The last thing you want is to have to pay someone else’s loan in addition to yours! That would make your new purchase much more expensive!

It is also a good idea to check its CARFAX file, which will reveal the vehicle's mileage (helping you prevent odometer fraud) and whether or not it has been in an accident.
