When we think of RAM, the first thing that comes to mind –and with reason- is a powerful and performant pickup truck. The next thing that pops up is the amount of available versions, one for every taste and budget.

Amongst the most popular models, there is the RAM 1500 and the RAM 1500 Classic. But how to tell the difference between those two trucks? And, mostly, which to choose over the other? Everything depends on your needs and your budget!

The 2022 RAM 1500 is now in its 5th generation and is available in 8 models:

  • Tradesman
  • Big Horn
  • Sport
  • Rebel
  • Laramie
  • Limited Longhorn
  • Limited
  • TRX

Depending on selected model, the 2022 RAM 1500 base price varies between $ 45,945 and $ 100,595. Moreover, you will have the choice between several different powertrains:

  • A 3.6 L V6 with 305 horsepower, with eTorque;
  • A 5.7 L V8 with 395 horsepower, with or without eTorque;
  • A 3.0 L V6 EcoDiesel with 260 horsepower;
  • A 6.2 L V8 supercharged with 702 horsepower.

These powertrains are coupled with a 4x2 or 4x4 system, depending on selected version. Towing capacity varies between 7,460 and 12,750 pounds, also according to selected model and powertrain.

Finally, you can opt for a 5’7’’ or 6’4’’ bed, as well as a Quad or Team Cab, depending on selected model.

RAM 1500 Classic

Incredibly popular amongst buyers, the RAM 1500 Classic offers prices that are inferior to the RAM 1500, with base prices from $ 34,990 and $ 52,985.

With differences in the design, the RAM 1500 appeared on the market in 2018 and has maintained the physical attributes from the 4th generation to be sold alongside the RAM 1500 in its 5th generation. It is offered in 5 different models:

        • Tradesman;
        • SLT;
        • Express;
        • Night Edition;
        • Warlock.

Contrary to the RAM 1500, the RAM 1500 Classic offers, on top of the Team and Quab Cab, a regular cab, on certain versions only. It also offers three different bed sizes: 5’7’’, 6’4’’ and 8’ (the latter is not available on the regular RAM 1500).

However, you will only have access to 2 powertrains: the 3.6 L V6 with 305 horsepower and the 5.7 L V8 with 395 horsepower, for a maximum towing capacity of 10,660 pounds. You will also have either a 4x2 or 4x4 drivetrain, depending on selected model.

Finally, both the RAM 1500 and the RAM 1500 Classic offer spacious interiors that are very comfortable and that offer loads of technologies and features, depending on selected version.

Conclusion

If you need the biggest towing capacity that a truck of this category can offer, then the RAM 1500 if the truck you need. If you are looking for a truck with a longer bed and that is more affordable, then the 2022 RAM 1500 classic is the one for you!
